The safety of oats for people with coeliac disease

Determining the safety of oats for people with coeliac disease

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research

Status: Underway

This multi-year study aimed to understand the factors that shape ‘oat’ safety for those with coeliac disease, e.g. are some varieties of oats safer than others? Is there a threshold serve of oats safe for all people with coeliac disease to consume? Can a blood-based immune test be developed to identify those who can/cannot tolerate oats?

The team at WEHI has been busy answering these questions, with the study now due to conclude in 2021. We look forward to the results.
