Media Response – Cost of Gluten-Free Food

Coeliac Australia is aware of the financial burden that the high cost of gluten-free food places on those living with coeliac disease. “We empathise deeply with the challenges our members face, particularly in the current cost of living crisis,” says Maryjane Aviles, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Coeliac Australia. “For those with coeliac disease, the gluten-free diet is not a choice, it is the only available treatment for the condition. With staple foods like bread often costing three times as much as their gluten-containing counterparts, we are committed to identifying ways to ensure that cost is not a barrier to successful treatment. “

Coeliac Australia recognises the importance of this issue and is committed to advocating for change. As an immediate step, we have developed a petition to the House of Representatives, calling for a subsidy on essential gluten-free foods. This initiative is vital for Australians with coeliac disease, ensuring they have access to the necessary foods for their health and well-being. Please support our campaign here.

In addition to proposed advocacy work, we are dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public through the upcoming Coeliac Australia Gluten-Free Expos. These events will offer valuable information on managing a gluten-free diet and practical tips to help mitigate costs. We also encourage our members to use their voices to help us advocate for change. By participating in offered research and awareness-raising campaigns, they can play a crucial role in our collective efforts to bring about meaningful improvements.

While we strive for long-term solutions, there are some practical suggestions Coeliac Australia has to help reduce the cost of a gluten-free diet:

  1. Choose Minimally Processed Foods: Prioritise naturally gluten-free whole foods such as in-season fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and seeds, legumes, and readily available gluten-free whole grains such as rice and corn.
  2. Look for Discounts: Take advantage of discounts and special offers on staple gluten-free items, such as breakfast cereals, flours, and pasta.
  3. Make Your Own: Cooking gluten-free meals and staples from scratch and cooking meals in bulk is more cost effective.
  4. Buy and Cook in Bulk: Purchasing larger quantities can lead to significant savings.
  5. Consider Breakfast Alternatives: Consider alternatives to packaged breakfast cereals, such as smoothies or omelettes.
  6. Members Benefits: Coeliac Australia members receive exclusive offers and discounts from our approved partners to purchase safe food options and help keep costs down.

Together, we can have influence and work towards a future where everyone has access to affordable, safe, and healthy gluten-free food options.
